This traditional Nottinghamshire made cheese is made with cow’s milk into an 8kg round and makes a fabulous table cheese.

The cheese was originally invented in Scotland at the beginning of the last Century and then introduced to the Stilton makers. Its orange colour is what distinguishes it from Stilton, created by adding a few drops of annatto, a natural dye into the vat. The cheese maintains its wonderful blue taste, while the annatto creates an underlying richness of buttery caramel. The cheese matures for 10 weeks and has a fat content of 34%

At No.8 we collect the cheese direct from Cropwell Bishop Creamery regularly to keep it in the freshest possible condition. They have won many awards for their cheese which is extremely creamy and full flavoured, – a real Deli favourite!

Since joining forces with the Fruit Basket on Gordon Road in 2008, both shops have changed a great deal. Together we are offering our local customers a delivery service 6 mornings a week for all fruit, vegetables, deli produce and wholefoods. We deliver more sacks of potatos from Howick’s Farm in Gotham to the poulation of West Bridgford, LadyBay, Edwalton and The Meadow than you would have thought possible. Andy our sprightly young driver is happy to help and has been doing a sterling job in our new delivery van.

Back on site, we have been continuing to source the freshest, tastiest produce available. We collect fresh fruit and vegetables everyday, in order to keep a check on quality, as well as have deliveries from all our suppliers as often as possible to keep our food in the best condition possible. The Deli is offering all customers tastings on any cheese in the counter and we also try to source cheeses that are missing from our display. The Fruit Basket has just started selling hand-made loaves baked at the Hambleton Hall Bakery. At present the bread is delivered on Saturdays at 10.30am, however due to popular demand we are going to extend the number of days the bread is sold. Once sorted I will post more information.

The new catering site is nearly ready to go live, which will allow customers the ability to pre-order a range of catering produce and hampers for delivery or collection.

Friday comes around quick. Today we have fresh jam donuts – however you have to be quick as they go fast.

We also have extra croissant, pain au chocolat, almond croissant and pain au raisin on offer. They are baked in our ovens first thing in the morning to be as fresh as possible. We have a large selection of Cholla egg loaves, we also provide sour dough rye and lots of Italian loaves, – all fresh today.

Any bread that is left at the end of each day is collected by a local charity for the homeless.

We have an order book for bread, so you can call through and reserve your loaf for collection when it suits. 100% rye, cholla and sour dough need 2 days notice. However most customers have a standing order and cancel if they don’t need it one week.

The sun is shinning, so we are going to be busy – hope you have a good day and maybe see you later.

The Deli Sandwich Bar is open from 8am till 4pm, or until the bread runs out. All the bread is delivered daily, fresh from our local Italian baker. The meats and cheeses are sliced each day, the salads are made fresh each day in the back of the Fruit Basket next door to the Deli. All the chicken and beef is roasted in our oven to be the best tasting possible. Our standard sandwich menu is listed on this site (Menu), however we can create what ever sandwich you desire from the fillings in the counter. We also make mixed salad boxes with different fillings, according to what you want on the day. If you don’t have time to wait, you can call before 11am, or the day before and your order will be waiting for you to collect.

Old Amsterdam

The lush green pastures of lowland Holland make it ideal dairy country, and its name has become eternally linked with cheese production. In fact the Netherlands are the largest exporters of cheese in the world.

The name Gouda comes from the small town situated between Rotterdam and Utrecht, which started producing the cheese for export in the 13th Century. Records show that it was popular in Britain at that time. Today Gouda production is no longer restricted to the local farms around the town itself, but is made all over Holland.

Old Amsterdam is a gouda which has been matured for 18 months. It comes coated in black wax. The paste is a deep yellow colour with a waxy texture, punctuated with a few holes. It is a pressed, uncooked cheese made from pasteurised milk. The fat content is 48%.

Although it can be used in cooking, Old Amsterdam is best enjoyed on its own. The full flavour also complements salads to give an added dimension.
